Do you know that desktop menu on Kubuntu has several modes? The default one is called “Launcher”, and the others are “Menu” and “Dashboard”. This tutorial will help you change your application menu (“start menu”) mode as you wish and make shortcut icons on Kubuntu 22.04 “Jammy Jellyfish”. This is also applicable to any other versions of Kubuntu as well as other GNU/Linux as long as they use KDE Plasma Desktop. Now let’s try it out!

Launcher mode
This is your default start menu appearance on Kubuntu 22.04. It is called “Launcher.” It is a modern generation of Launcher in the past KDE versions.

Menu mode
This is the classic appearance of your start menu and it resembles that in Windows 95/98/XP/Vista. This mode is called “Menu”.
Dashboard mode
This is the fullscreen start menu mode and it resembles that in Ubuntu Unity Desktop in the 2010’s or Android. It is called “Dashboard.”
You can try and find which one do you like the most.
Switching Menu Mode
1. Right-click application menu button.
2. Click Show Alternatives…Â

3. Choices of mode will show.
4. Select mode “Menu” or “Launcher” or “Dashboard” then click Switch.
5. Click menu to see if it changed. Done.
6. To switch back, repeat steps 1-5.
